Fowlers Motorcycles - History Since 1926

1920 - The Beginning

Fowlers was founded in 1926 by Alice and Frank Fowler, who first opened the doors to their bicycle shop. Just a year later, their son Harry joined the business, bringing with him a passion for motorcycles and laying the foundations for a family legacy that still thrives today.

1930 - Supporting the War Effort

Harry ran the business until 1939, when the government purchased much of the motorcycle stock to support the war. From 1939 to 1945, Fowlers turned to engineering aircraft components to support the war effort.

1940 - Back to Motorcycles

After the war, Fowlers returned to motorcycle sales, while the engineering arm separated to operate independently, continuing to this day as Fowlers Engineering. Fowlers secures the Matchless franchise, beginning its growth as a franchised dealership.

1950 - Harry's Racing Success

Throughout the ’40s and ’50s, Harry made his mark on the sport as a successful scrambler and trials rider, earning numerous trophies and widespread respect within the industry. More major franchises follow — James, Francis Barnett, BSA — and Fowlers becomes a BSA parts distributor, launching its wholesale business.

1960 - New Partnerships

The business expanded with a new showroom on Grosvenor Road and secured major franchises including Triumph, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki — partnerships that are central to Fowlers today.

1970 - Continued Growth

The showroom doubled in size, and Fowlers deepened its commitment to motorsport, supporting Jock Taylor in his journey to the World Sidecar Championship.

1980 - A New Home

Fowlers relocated to its current landmark premises near Temple Meads, entering a period of significant growth. Jock Taylor went on to become World Sidecar Champion.

1990 - Triumph Reunited

Additional sites opened across the country before the company refocused on its Bristol home. The reinvented Triumph franchise was awarded once again, reuniting the two iconic names.

2000 - Honouring Harry’s Legacy

Fowlers continued expanding, developing one of Europe’s most impressive motorcycle dealerships. Harry worked six days a week until just days before his passing at age 94. Hundreds of riders followed his Triumph-drawn hearse through Bristol in a moving tribute to his lifelong dedication.

2010 - Built for the Modern Rider

Major refurbishments modernised the showroom, new franchises were added with dedicated brand areas, and the much loved Harry’s Café received a fresh new look.

2026 - Ready for the Next 100 Years
