Honda’s New Arrivals!

By Fowlers News

Honda is delighted to announce details of two significant new arrivals to the off-road racing world: a totally revised CRF450R moto-crosser, and a new enduro racer – the CRF450RX.

CRF450R & CRF450RX

2017 CRF450R & CRF450RX

A moto-cross benchmark since its introduction in 2002, the CRF450R has been redesigned ‘from the ground-up’ for 2017 under the development theme of ‘Absolute Holeshot’. Honda’s open class moto-crosser has earned a reputation for being the best-handling 450cc moto-crosser available, with strong, useable engine power and a chassis that allows riders of all experience levels to put every drop of that power to good use. For the 2017 year model, the full re-design brings a dose of heavy-hitting top end performance in an even sharper, more rider-friendly overall package.

The new CRF450R features:

  • An HRC-inspired power-up engine with an 11% top-end power boost provided by revised cylinder head with greater valve lift, higher compression ratio and new intake giving a straighter pathway into the inlet ports.
  • Stronger torque, particularly low down, but right throughout the rpm range, for a 5% improvement in acceleration out of the gate.
  • New seventh generation aluminium frame with lower centre of gravity, shorter wheelbase and shorter distance between swingarm pivot and rear wheel, offering unprecedented levels of rear traction.
  • Race-kit specification 49mm Showa steel spring front fork.
  • Titanium fuel tank, smooth, aerodynamically-efficient plastics and the option of electric starter

“Our focus has been on producing a machine with exceptional engine performance, outstanding traction and a low centre of gravity – to create a 5% improvement in acceleration on the previous model. The phrase underpinning development was ‘Absolute Holeshot’. The CRF450R is already proving its worth in the Japanese MX championship, winning the first five races. We are proud to give this kind of performance to motocross lovers worldwide.”

Alongside the CRF450R, Honda can now also provide enduro riders with a race-ready machine – the new CRF450RX. Sharing the CRF450R’s new engine and frame package, the CRF450RX has crucial changes to create an uncompromising enduro focus.

  • Revised suspension settings for enhanced control.
  • Revised PGM-FI settings and an 8.5 litre fuel tank for range of approximately 65km.
  • Three revised engine maps, selectable at the handlebar using Honda’s Engine Mode Select Button.
  • 18” rear wheel.
  • Sidestand and electric start as standard.

“The CRF450RX is a pure, race-ready enduro tool like nothing else Honda has ever made. It uses the greatly improved performance of the brand new CRF450R and we made no sacrifices in producing this ‘RX’ enduro version, which offers something completely new to expert riders everywhere. It is built to win straight from the crate, at the highest level of competition.”

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team has completed the roll-out of the KTM RC16 at Austria’s Red Bull Ring exactly 15 months after announcing its proposed entry into MotoGP in the 2017 season.

Test rider Alex Hoffmann carried out three days of comprehensive testing with the MotoGP racing bike at the venue that will see the return of the Motorcycle World Championship in 2016. The performance tests with the bike that has been completely developed in-house by KTM were conducted in good conditions and went exactly according to plan.

Pit Beirer (Motorsport Director): “Thursday was a very emotional moment, not only for me but also for the company, and I believe for many KTM fans in Austria and all over the world. This, and the start of the project on the racing circuit are just as important as any lap time. A very big thanks to Alex (Hofmann) and the entire team for the excellent performance. The feedback and the fact that we were already able to put in very many laps without any problems gives us a lot of motivation for the next steps in this long journey towards our entry into MotoGP in 2017”.

Sebastian Risse (Technical Director Onroad): “There was of course a great deal of tension and pressure on the team and the roll-out took place earlier and on a larger scale than originally planned. The fact that it all went as smoothly as it did, and the data that we have been able to gather makes us very optimistic about the further development of the KTM RC16. Although we are still far removed from the detailed work, these three days were a very positive and instructive test for us.”

Alex Hofmann (Test Rider MotoGP): “What shall I say? Just take a look at my boots and the bike. They both look like new. I have already experienced very different premieres. A big respect for what KTM has already achieved in this extremely short time. I think you can not only see it in my face, but also among all those who have worked here with such enthusiasm and professionalism.”
Another test with Alex Hofmann and the second test rider Mika Kallio is planned for this year. Parallel to this, there will be intensive further development on the KTM RC16 at KTM factory in Austria’s Mattighofen and Munderfing.

Guy Martin

Road racer and speed freak Guy Martin says he was set to retire after the 2014 season but was swayed by a new deal made by TAS Racing.

Ahead of the 2015 season TAS will switch manufacturer to BMW. Martin described the new venture in which TAS become BMW’s official road racing team as ‘just what we need going into next season’.

Guy Martin, whose popularity has risen in recent years due to various TV appearances, has now been riding with TAS for four seasons and looks likely to retire from the team after his fifth.
